Location and Topography
The Najran Region is located in the southwest of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between latitudes 17° and 20° North and longitudes 44° and 52° East. It covers an area of approximately 365,000 square kilometers, in addition to the area of Al-Kharkhir, at an elevation ranging between 1,100 and 1,700 meters above sea level. The region consists of seven governorates in addition to the Emirate of the Region and includes 54 administrative centers.
Najran is bordered by the Rub’ al Khali Desert to the east, the Asir Region to the west, the Riyadh Region to the north, and the Republic of Yemen to the south. The region includes several governorates such as Sharurah, Hubuna, Thar, Yadamah, Badr Al-Janoub, Khabash, Al-Wadiah, and Al-Kharkhir.
Najran City is considered the third largest Saudi city in terms of area, covering approximately 360,000 square kilometers. Due to its strategic location, it encompasses three distinct geographical environments:
A fertile plain area located in central Najran, representing the historical and population center. It includes several valleys, most notably Wadi Najran.
A mountainous area in the west and north, characterized by a moderate summer climate. It includes many beautiful parks and dense sidr trees. Important governorates are concentrated in this area, including Hubuna, Badr Al-Janoub, Yadamah, and Thar. Thar Governorate is known for its mineral resources, which have received attention from the Saudi government, particularly gold mines located in Al-Jawshan, affiliated with Al-Safah Center. Many mountains in the region contain granite rocks used in the production of marble and granite, supplying a significant portion of the Kingdom’s needs.
A sandy area in the east, forming part of the Rub’ al Khali Desert. This area includes one of the most important governorates in the region, Sharurah, located about 330 km from the main regional center, and Al-Kharkhir, approximately 750 km away.
Climate
The climate of Najran Region varies according to differences in elevation. In general, it is hot in summer, with rainfall occurring in the mountainous areas, and moderate to cool in winter. Average temperatures range between 14°C and 37°C throughout the year.
The region experiences easterly winds in winter, easterly and southeasterly winds in spring, and northeasterly winds in summer. The average wind speed is approximately 6.6 km/h.
