The Journey of Najran Region Municipality Authority

With the establishment of the Municipality of Najran on 15/10/1375 AH, the first person to preside over the Municipality of Najran was Mr. Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim. He was followed by a number of presidents:

  • Mr. Mohammed bin Muslim

  • Mr. Ali bin Mohammed Al-Sharakh

  • Mr. Suleiman bin Abdullah Al-Sulaiman

  • Eng. Mohammed bin Hamdan Atiyah

  • Eng. Saad bin Fayez Al-Shahri

  • Eng. Fares bin Mayah Al-Shafaq

  • Eng. Hamad bin Hussein Aiban

  • Eng. Abdullah bin Ayed Dalbouh

  • Eng. Eid bin Nayef Al-Otaibi

  • Eng. Saleh Gharamallah Al-Ghamdi

  • The municipality gradually advanced in the level of services it provided until its designation was changed from “Municipality” to “Amanah” (Municipality Authority) in 1426 AH. New residential areas were planned, most notably Al-Faisaliyah District and Al-Fahd District, along with other modern subdivisions east of the old city. This marked a new phase of growth and development, as population density increased in line with significant expansion in the city’s agricultural, commercial, and administrative sectors.

As a result of this development, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs carried out the Najran Planning Study project in 1396 AH. A master plan for the city was prepared, including the fundamental strategies for urban growth, taking into account economic development, human resource development, and social development in line with population growth indicators. The municipality implemented this plan to achieve its intended objectives, which included planning, opening, paving, and lighting streets; establishing parks and public gardens; and constructing various facilities such as water networks, markets, slaughterhouses, cemetery fencing, and related infrastructure.

The next phase of the city’s growth began in 1410 AH when the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs prepared a new comprehensive development plan for the Najran region covering the period 1411–1426 AH. The study focused on achieving maximum economic and urban revitalization across all economic sectors in both urban and rural development areas, in harmony with the Kingdom’s five-year development plans and within a long-term strategic vision.

Due to the agricultural expansion witnessed in the city—especially in the Al-Ghuwayla area located southeast of the city—there was a focus on producing citrus fruits, dates, and vegetables. Urban and commercial expansion also increased along the city’s main west-to-east axis extending along Airport Road, and along the north-south axis extending along Khamis Road. This growth led to the preparation of new residential plans along both axes. A regulatory plan was also developed to establish a new suburb east of Najran Airport, designed to accommodate more than fifteen thousand housing units along with all necessary facilities.

The first industrial city was established, with capacity for more than seven hundred factories and workshops. Two additional main growth axes were added—one extending along Najran–Sharurah Road and the other along Al-Sharafah–Al-Lujam Road. The southern and northern parts of the city were connected through bridges crossing Wadi Najran, completing the framework of this rising city along its banks. With the completion and approval of the structural master plan prepared for the city, it is expected—God willing—that Najran will become one of the leading cities of Saudi Arabia.
